Video Overlay Graphics for YouTube
A YouTube overlay template is a graphic that plays over your footage with a transparent background — a note, a marker, a toast or a title bar — and exports as ProRes 4444, WebM or a PNG sequence so nothing sits behind it.
An overlay sits on top of footage to call something out — a note, a toast, a marker, a title bar — and leaves again without a cut. It is what you reach for when the picture needs a word rather than an edit.
The point of an overlay is that it does not take over. It arrives while the shot continues, says one thing, and goes. That is a different job from a title card, which stops the video to make its point, and it is why these are built small and quick.
The shelf carries watch-page and video-title bars for framing a clip, toasts and notes for annotating a demonstration, and markers for pointing at something in the frame.
They export with a transparent background, so they can be dropped onto a timeline over existing footage in any editor — you do not need to rebuild your video around them.
Every template here is free to open, free to change and free to watch back, with no account needed to browse. Exporting the finished file costs $5 once for that project, or a plan covers every export.

Using overlay graphics
- How is an overlay different from a lower third?
- A lower third answers "who is this?" and lives in a fixed band along the bottom. An overlay can go anywhere in the frame and answers "look at this" — it points at something in the shot rather than labelling the speaker.
- Will these cover the player controls?
- Not if you keep them clear of the bottom edge. The safest area for an overlay is the upper two thirds, where nothing the player draws will ever land on it.
- Do I need After Effects, and can I recolour one?
- No to the first and yes to the second. Every element of an overlay is a layer with its own colour, and changing them takes a click each. The export is a transparent WebM or MOV that any editor reads directly, which is what lets an overlay sit over a moving shot instead of on a plate.
Rather build your own?
YouTube Overlay MakerAn overlay is the one kind of graphic where the transparency is not a detail of the export — it is the entire point. Everything else about building one follows from that.Next
- Make it yoursChange the words, the colours and the timing without breaking the animation that was built for the shape.
- Export it with transparencyWhich format your editor actually reads, and why a black rectangle behind your graphic means the wrong one was chosen.
- Keep it clear of the edgesWhere an overlay can sit without colliding with the player, the end screen or a caption.
- YouTube Overlay MakerBuild an overlay from nothing, with the transparency decided by you rather than inherited.
- What exporting costsOpening this template, changing it and watching it back are free. Getting the finished file out is $5 once for this project, or a plan if you make them often.
